A Luxury Home Remodel in Thousand Oaks, California
California full-service design and renovation firm Kitchens Etc. serves Ventura and Los Angeles counties with everything from material selection to remodel management. In one down-to-the-studs renovation in Thousand Oaks, they handled everything from electrical to plumbing and much more, including a complete bath remodel. The client envisioned a primary bath with a spacious shower and freestanding tub, where she could enjoy long, relaxing soaks at the end of the day. Designer Danielle Oldenkamp landed on a design aesthetic she describes as “earthy and minimalist, but expressive.” To achieve that, the bath’s window was reconstructed to make it a focal point in the room and provide a backdrop for the soaking tub, Breanne by Hydro Systems.
With its tapered sides, and rolled rim, Breanne is a re-imagined nineteenth-century slipper tub. To complement these elegant features, Oldenkamp chose an unlacquered brass tub filler set behind the tub. In addition to the aesthetic qualities of the tub, practical features such as the deck in the interior offers the perfect place for a bar or soap or a glass of wine to perch during a soak. The bathroom’s custom blinds are operated by remote control so that nothing interrupts a long bath.
Oldenkamp positioned the tub on the backdrop of 3 x 6-inch travertine tiles set in a herringbone pattern. Unlacquered brass plumbing fixtures and accents, such as the mirrors, and a rattan chandelier over the tub contribute to the earthy feel. Sable cabinet hardware and sconce lighting add contemporary elements. An arched niche above the tub replaces shelving.
The completed project projects a relaxing, refreshing ambiance. “I wanted the client to wake up every day and feel a sense of relief and happiness when she walks into her beautiful brand new bathroom,” says Oldenkamp. “The freestanding tub was the most important part of the project. The tub really highlights the bathroom; it creates a sense of serenity and warmth to the space making it the stand-out feature.”
