Inside Studio Mesa Design’s ‘Peaceful, Feminine’ Primary Bath in Los Feliz

In the hills of Los Feliz, bicoastal firm Studio Mesa transformed a narrow, utilitarian primary bath into a serene retreat anchored by a sculptural Hydro Systems freestanding tub and a dramatic book matched porcelain wall.

Known for creating contemporary interiors that are both tailored and lived-in, the boutique firm approaches every project as a personalized story. This project was no exception. “Our client was seeking a peaceful, feminine atmosphere—without veering into anything overly ‘girly,’” says Jill Norman, partner at Studio Mesa.

“The goal was to design a space that felt restorative,” she continues, “using soft colors, natural materials, and a layout that balanced indulgence with everyday functionality.”

The redesigned footprint positioned the Marquis tub as the centerpiece, nestled into the corner of the open shower, its sloped silhouette framed by veined porcelain slabs in muted grey and blush tones. “Because the bathroom was long and narrow, we knew the shower wall could become a real statement,” Norman explains. “The book matched slabs not only maximize the impact of the space but also create a stunning backdrop that allows the tub to really sing.”

A custom oak vanity with a sage-hued countertop, softly arched mirror, and sculptural sconces underscores the studio’s ability to layer clean lines with tactile warmth. “It’s about creating spaces that feel polished but also deeply livable,” Norman notes.

For Norman, the freestanding tub was central. “We sat in many tubs with the client, and the Marquis kept coming back as the front-runner,” she says. “The back height and arm comfort made it stand out, and its compact footprint was perfect for the room.”

An unexpected highlight came during fabrication. “By chance, I was able to tour the Hydro Systems facility while the tub was being made,” Norman shares. “Seeing the craftsmanship firsthand gave me such an appreciation for the detail involved. I even sent photos of the process to my client—it made the piece feel that much more personal.”

The finished bath reflects Studio Mesa’s ethos: warm, refined design without pretense. It also achieves something more—a modern sanctuary that functions as both a space of wellness and the rhythms of daily life.
