The New Shower Pan That Eliminates the Most Complicated Step in Linear Drain Installations

Today’s bath designs call for curbless showers, large-format tile, and increasingly, floors that flow without interruption—making a linear drain the natural choice.

What’s a Linear Drain?

The appeal of a linear drain is its minimalist profile. Running along one wall of the shower floor, it channels water in a single direction and allows the floor to slope cleanly toward it— thus eliminating the need for a center drain, radiating tile cuts, and general visual interruption.

Achieving that clean look, however, is not always simple. Linear drains are notoriously complex to install.

Unlike a center drain, which tolerates minor slope variations and simpler waterproofing approaches, a linear drain demands precision. The subfloor must be level to within 1/8 inch to ensure water drains in one direction. It requires careful integration with waterproof membranes, coordination with existing plumbing configurations, and — in hospitality renovations — often has to contend with concrete subfloors where relocating waste lines isn’t an option. Add ADA slope requirements for curbless entries, the need to move quickly through large-scale renovations, and the expectation that waterproofing holds in multi-story buildings, and the complexity compounds fast.

For most contractors, the waterproofing step is where the project gets complicated.

That’s where the new HydroLuxe SS™ shower pan configurations with trench drains change the equation.

A Smarter Approach to Linear Drain Installation

Available in two sizes—60″ x 36″ and 60″ x 33″—the new pans feature a three-sided flange and a textured bottom. More importantly, Hydro Systems’ proprietary HydroLuxe SS™ solid surface material acts as its own waterproof barrier. There’s no hot mopping, no waterproof liner, and minimal subfloor preparation. The result: faster installations, fewer steps, and lower overall project costs.

No Waterproofing Needed

Eliminating the waterproofing step isn’t just a time saver — it simplifies the entire project. Fewer subcontractors means a tighter schedule and fewer coordination points. No liner or mop material means no waiting on cure times before the next trade can move in. And with fewer steps between framing and tile, the margin for error shrinks considerably.

For showrooms and contractors, there’s another benefit worth noting: reduced risk of callbacks. Waterproofing failures are among the most common — and costly — sources of post-installation claims. A pan that is the waterproof barrier eliminates that variable entirely.

Easy to Clean and Maintain

HydroLuxe SS™ is a blend of natural minerals and man-made composites that cures into a 100% solid, non-porous surface, making it resistant to bacteria, mold, mildew, scratches, and stains, with no specialized cleaning products required.

The HydroLuxe SS™ Shower Pans with Linear Drain system works well across many project types, but it is especially valuable in commercial environments, where durability and straightforward long-term maintenance often drive material decisions.
