Project Spotlight: Inside a ‘Calming, Restorative’ Sedona Sanctuary by Stephanie Larsen

When it comes to wellness destinations, few landscapes hold a candle to Sedona’s iconic red rocks. That storied high-desert setting became a fitting backdrop for a restorativebath retreat imagined by Scottsdale-based designer Stephanie Larsen.

Part of a larger home renovation, the retreat reflects Larsen’s longtime talent for creating turnkey homes and spaces defined by meticulous craft, high-vibrational energy, and a seamless blend of beauty and function. “They wanted to create a grounding, spa-like environment where they could begin and end their day,” she explains.

To give the homeowners their personal wellness oasis, Larsen first opened up the layout to the surrounding terrain, allowing high-desert light and red rock views to saturate the room. The flowing, expansive floor plan was then anchored by spacious his-and-hers countertops, an oversized vanity mirror, and Tura Seeded Glass Sconces from Hubbardton Forge mounted directly onto the glass “to maximize space while playing with lines and reflections,” she describes.

Warm neutral tones and organic finishes form the foundation of the room’s color story, brought to life through rift-cut white oak cabinetry, woven window coverings, and elegant Vancouver quartzite countertops. For chromatic interest, Larsen introduced accents of seafoam and bottleneck green, including sage porcelain shower tiles and a hand-knotted emerald wool-and-silk rug.

When selecting the fixtures that would complete the spa-like space, Larsen knew a standard shower wouldn’t suffice. “Bathtubs naturally signal thoughts of rest, ritual, and a slower pace,” says Larsen. “While we often see showers through a more functional lens, bathtubs allow us to lean into moments of pause more freely, deepening the room’s restorative connection and creating a natural centerpiece that reminds us to unwind. It was these sentiments that made it incredibly important to include a bathtub in this space.”

Since the clients had a strong desire to move away from glossy, white bathroom fixtures, Larsen turned to Hydro Systems. The company’s custom capabilities allowed Larsen’s team “to pull a color for the bathtub that complemented the room’s floor tiles and fulfilled that chromatic wish.”

She eventually landed on the Alamo tub, one of the company’s most beloved designs, in a rich, earthy stone grey.

“What drew us to the tub initially was its simple egg-shaped design, which blended seamlessly with the room’s modern aesthetic,” says Larsen. Paired with a translucent, sandalwood-finished Yepsen glass sink by Kohler, the stone grey vessel became an instant, grounding focal point.

All-bronze gunmetal GRAFF fittings complement the room’s hardware, vanity mirror, and shower frame. These details, including a linear shower drain set flush with the floor, lend the room a sleek aesthetic that keeps the sanctuary feeling effortlessly uncluttered and calm.

In a region revered for its healing energy, Larsen created a “restorative, calming” spirit inside, leaving the Alamo tub to stand as a sanctuary within a sanctuary.
